It Started with a conversation.
Not a sermon. Not a strategy meeting.
Just a conversation over coffee.
“Vermont doesn’t need another church,”
She said as she set down her cup.
“Really?” I replied. “What do you mean?
We moved here to start a new church precisely because
Vermont is the least churched state in the country.”
She didn’t hesitate.
“Churches hurt people. People like my family and friends.
They don’t help. They hurt.
This pandemic shut them all down and nobody cared.
Nobody even noticed.”
That moment stayed with me.
Because she wasn’t angry.
She was simply telling the truth as she had experienced it.
And it forced us to ask a difficult question:
What if Vermont doesn’t need another church?
What if it needs a different kind of church?
And if we are going to start one at all..
…it would have to be different.
So church looks a little different here.
